Developing a fire safety plan

If you’re like most parents, you know how important developing a fire safety plan is for your family. No matter how old your children are, you can teach them how to escape safely and adhere to a safety plan that can save their lives. Fire & smoke damage restoration in Long Island NY, and other areas, can restore your home to its original condition; but your family can’t be replaced. That’s why it’s imperative to make sure they get out safely. Here are some tips on developing a fire safety plan:

  • Have a fire extinguisher: Ideally you should have one in your kitchen, laundry room, and near your bedroom area. More importantly, make sure your children know how to use it. Even toddlers can be taught how to use them. While you don’t want your toddler trying to put out fires, they can alert you to emergencies.

  • Hide matches and lighters: You don’t want young children playing with lighters and matches, so keep them out of sight and out of reach.

  • Points of egress: Make sure every family member knows how to exit from wherever they are in the house in case of fire. Have a designated meeting place, preferably across the street or a short distance away from your house. Also, designate someone to call the fire department.

  • Plan regular fire drills: To make sure that in the event of a real emergency everyone knows what to do, hold regular fire drills.

  • Make sure you install smoke detectors: This is absolutely essential in any home. Ideally, you should have one on each floor. Test them regularly and change the batteries at least twice a year.

In the event of a fire, hiring a company that specializes in fire & smoke damage restoration in Long Island NY, or your local area, can help ensure your home is restored to its former glory.
