What Can Invisalign Correct?

Most people have heard of the Invisalign system, which is a modern take on the traditional braces. These braces are clear and fit over the teeth. Over time, they move the teeth over to where they should be. They are better than traditional braces in many ways because you can take them out to brush your teeth and sleep, and aren’t required to have metal placed on the teeth. However, these braces won’t fix every problem, and it is important to know which problems can be set with the system to determine if you’re a good candidate for the process.

Gaps

In some cases, the jawbone continues to grow after adulthood, causing the teeth to have large gaps between them. In other instances, a missing tooth can cause the others to move away from each other, causing a bite. These holes can cause gum problems, periodontal disease and pockets.

Overbite

Overbite, or overjet occurs when the upper set of teeth close over the lower set of teeth. In some cases, it is minimal, but sometimes the upper teeth fully cover the lower teeth. It’s caused by poor oral health, genetics and overdevelopment of the bones. This can cause irritation, rubbing on the lower teeth and gum problems.

Underbite

Underbite is the opposite of overbite when the lower teeth close in front of the upper teeth. In most cases, it’s caused by an undergrowth or overgrowth within the jaw or by missing upper teeth. Sometimes, this problem can cause tooth wear and difficulty in chewing, along with joint pain and pain in the jaw.

Open Bite

An open bite is when the back teeth close entirely, but there is a gap between the upper and lower front teeth. This is typically caused by genetics or sometimes thumb-sucking. It can be painful or difficult to chew, cause speech impediments and can cause bigger problems, such as TMJ.

Overcrowding

Overcrowding can also be fixed with Invisalign. Sometimes the jaw doesn’t grow enough to hold all of your teeth, causing them to be incredibly close together. This can get worse over time, causing crooked teeth, excessive plaque buildup and tooth decay.

Crossbite

Crossbite occurs when the jaws are misaligned. The front upper teeth and lower teeth should be right above each other and when they aren’t, it is called crossbite. This causes bone loss, improper wear on the teeth, and gum disease.
