Environmentally Responsible Energy Consumption with a Geothermal Heat Pump in Reno

by | Jul 20, 2017 | Air conditioning

A geothermal heat pump in Reno is fuel free heating that gets its heat source from subterranean thermal energy. There is an unlimited source of heat present underground and temperatures are stable all year round. Geothermal energy saves consumers money by removing the need for a fossil-fuel energy source.

Horizontal Closed-Looped Geothermal Heat Pump Systems

There are four types of ground loop geothermal heating systems. Three are closed-looped, and one open-looped. Closed looped systems are made of plastic tubing buried underground or underwater. An open-looped system uses well water or the surface of a body of water.

Horizontal closed-looped systems can be installed on real estate with a large landscape. There needs to be trenches that are about four feet deep. One way to layout the materials is with two pipes. One is buried six feet, and the other four feet.

Another way that confines the space used and cuts down on the cost of labor is the slinky method. Piping is installed in a much shorter trench. The slinky method can be installed on land with limited space.

Vertical Closed-Looped Geothermal Heat Pump Systems

A vertical geothermal heat pump in Reno is most often used for commercial buildings and schools. This is because the available space on this type of real estate is usually limited. Vertical systems are also suitable for land with shallow soil.

Holes are drilled into the soil about 20 feet apart and approximately 300 feet deep. U shaped pipes are installed vertically underground with horizontal pipes connected up top. The pipes create vertical loops and are connected to the heat pump inside the building.

Land with its own small body of water can use a pond/lake system. This is a cost-effective option. A line pipe from the building is installed underground that feeds to the water supply. The coiled parts of the pipe are placed about eight feet under the water.

Open-Looped Geothermal Systems

This system is for well water or surface body water. The heat exchanging fluid is circulated through the system. After the heated water does its job, it is returned to the ground through the well or surface water discharge to be reheated. Visit website for more details.
